Laurie Borggreve is an American artist and sculptress. Her early years were spent studying design, studio arts, and art history. After graduating with a degree in Design Communications from the University of Minnesota, she moved to San Francisco, where she focused on painting and worked as an art director to support her career in fine arts. She now combines her design and fine arts background to make award winning installations and mixed media sculptures throughout the country. In 2019, the City of Minneapolis commissioned her to design and create a 30-foot permanent ceiling installation for their new public service building. Her work can also be seen locally at the Four Seasons Minneapolis, Restaurant Demi and the Anoka County Library.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I use a wide variety of materials to create delicate and highly detailed sculptures and installations. Many of my pieces are made up of hundreds and often thousands of individually hand-made components. No two pieces are ever alike.

Transforming conventional materials, such as liquid adhesives, resin, glass, and plastics, beyond their intended purpose is a consistent focus in my work. Discovering the potential of a material and how it might enhance a specific message or idea is an integral part of my process. I use many different methods and techniques to create the pieces that make up my artwork.

Current events, contradiction and collection, and the natural world are the influences that shape my work. With tiny details and subtle messages, I invite people to look past the obvious and engage them in close observation. Ideally, making a visual statement that will spark conversation and mark a point in time.

Sometimes, my pieces form organically. Other times, they are planned in advance and highly structured. I use these disparate methods and creative disciplines in order to make each piece a unique technical challenge. This also allows me to convey the beautyI feel variety can add to art and the everyday world.
