Mary Meuwissen

  • BIO

Mary S. Meuwissen is a visual artist influenced by strong color, loose marks and geometric shapes.
Her background is in Art Education, with emphasis in art history and watercolor. She spent many years in the corporate world in sales. Her passion to paint returned full force in 2013 after being introduced to oil/cold wax medium. She
also is a mixed media artist and continues to learn and refine her processes in both areas.

Mary resides in both Minneapolis, MN and Marana, AZ. She works and displays her work in Studio 280 at the Northrup King Building, Minneapolis, MN.

Using cold wax as a medium with my oil paints, I am able to develop a unique surface by applying thin layers of paint, adding bold textural elements and digging back into those layers to explore the history that lies underneath the surface. The addition of cold wax (a mixture of beeswax, resins and solvents), the finished product has a rich satin luster which captures and reflects light.

Artist Statement

My paintings start with playful and spontaneous exploration of line, marks, geometric and organic shapes on birch cradled panels and/or canvas. By adding/removing both thick and thin layers of oil paint and cold wax medium with various tools, the surface becomes a palette of emerging ideas and rich color that will transform into a final painting. I choose my color palette of bold, unexpected colors to define a sense of energy, joy and surprise.
I believe that in each painting there is a sense of my history - my story. It is my wish that the viewer would find the nuances of my inspirations and identify with their won story.
